Basil deters aphids and whiteflies that target tomatoes, improves pollinator traffic, and many growers report better fruit flavor from the pairing. It also fills a low ground layer that tomatoes leave empty.
“Why does Garden Brain want me to plant clover after my tomatoes?”
Tomatoes are heavy nitrogen feeders and deplete the soil. Clover is a nitrogen fixer. Its roots host bacteria that pull nitrogen from the air and return it to the soil, restoring what was taken out.
“Why should I harvest basil now even if I don't need it?”
Once basil flowers it redirects energy to seed production and the leaves turn bitter and sparse. Cutting the flower heads now keeps the plant in a vegetative state and doubles the harvest window.
